Testing out the Braun No touch + forehead thermometer (NTF3000)

I don't think this could be any easier to use

When your children are unwell finding a way to take their temperature as quickly as possible is essential, especially if the sick child hates having it taken.

You only need two buttons - one to turn it on and one to take the temperature

In 23 months since becoming parents we have used a number of thermometers and have found them all to be a bit fiddly and with a wriggly baby or toddler who hates having their temperature taken, even if it doesn't touch them, we have found ourselves wanting to throw the thermometer out of the window.

When asked if we wanted to review the NEW Braun No touch + forehead thermometer NTF3000 I braced myself for another thermometer that I would have to read the manual from cover to cover just wot work out how to turn it on! This was not the case, however, and within seconds of taking the thermometer out of the box we had already worked out and taken both children's temperature and of course mine and hubby's (surely everyone else goes about taking ever temperature that they can when in possession of a thermometer, right?). In fact until writing this review I had not even touched the instruction manual. Other devices we have used have requires multiple click of buttons or combinations of buttons and we have often given up.

Temperature is shows in one of three colours to indicate if you have a fever or not

The thermometer allows you to take a temperature by either touching the forehead or holding it within 5 centimetres of the forehead (and it will tell you if you are too far away). If you are using the no touch technology there is an orange light that helps you position it correctly. Then you just press the temperature button (or press and hold) and voila you get the a reading which will then display on the screen as either green, yellow or red.

It is easy to turn the sound on and off with the handy button on the side
Having used this a few times (we were lucky, or unlucky, to get this when everyone in the house was unwell) I found it so simple and quick to use. Temperatures could fluctuate a wee bit, which we find with all thermometers, and so we tended to take the temperature a few times and take an average. M normally hates getting her temperature taken, whether that is in the ear or no touch, but she took to this one so well and actually asked me to keep taking it. She even started playing doctors and taking all our temperatures, finding it so fun to use. She is 23 months old and managed to work this so that shows how easy it is.

You can change between °C and °F with the flick of a switch under the batteries
The coloured indicator was handy as it gave you an idea of how much of a temperature the kids had without having to work it out. We also got the chance to see that all the coloured ratings work as the kids and myself, managed to get a reading in each colour setting.

Temperature colours:

Green: > 35.7° – 37.4 °C (> 96.3° – 99.4 °F) - Acceptable

Yellow: > 37.4° – 38.5 °C (> 99.4° – 101.3 °F) - Elevated

Red: > 38.5° – 42.2 °C (> 101.3° – 108.0 °F) - Possible high fever

Positive points:

  • No touch up to 5 centimetres from the head!
  • Can turn the beep off so easy to take temperature when children are sleeping.
  • You don't need to read the manual to use, just turn on, point and read the result.
  • Colour coded results so you know if it is a normal, elevated or possible high fever.
  • You can change between °C and °F.
  • No need to read pages and pages of instructions.
Negative points:
  • It does not have an age setting to change the fever guidelines to match the age of the child (F was under 3 months when we used this and so would have been good to see if he had a higher temperature than we thought).
As you can see from the above I really think this is a great device and I think we may have finally come across a thermometer that we are truly happy with. It is quite simply the easiest one we have owned and was as breeze to use. Braun have Age Precision® technology in a couple of other thermometers  and this would have been a great addition to the Braun No touch + forehead thermometer but otherwise I would HIGHLY recommend this to any parent out there.
