Family bike rides start with a balance bike

Practising for a big girls' bike

If there is one thing I want to encourage my children to do it is to spend time outdoors and exercise. One thing I am looking forward to, in the future, is going on family bike rides and to start this journey M has been practising using her balance bike.

I was unsure whether to buy a pedal bike or balance bike but when I saw a balance bike for sale on Facebook I snapped it up and since then M has have a few shots up and down the livingroom. Nothing much as we don't have space and then I put it away for a bit as it was just getting in the way.

This week I decided to see if M wanted to have a shot on her bike whilst F napped and quickly realised she was going to want to go much further than just on the grass area across the road. So since she was keen we went out for a walk. A walk which should take 30 minutes there and back but which took 2 hours. I was a little nervous to go as far as we did as I pictured having to carry her and her bike home but she surprised me once again.
“Life is like riding a bicycle. In order to keep your balance, you must keep moving.” Albert Einstein
She managed on her bike the whole way (just over a mile) and had so much fun. She misbalanced three times and was generally so good on it. I would never have guessed it was her first shot outside had I not known.

It is amazing how quickly they develop and grow and pick up new skills isn't it? I was anticipating this being used closer to her third birthday next year and had thought about keeping it hidden until Christmas but I am so glad we never. Even when there was a hill she refused to let go of "my bi" and had a right tantrum when I took her bike up so w could walk along a busy bit of road that had no pavement.

Seems like I won't have much trouble encouraging her to be an outdoors kid (and she constantly asks to go out for a walk and can imagine out on her bike now too). She just loves to have space to burn off energy and as much as we enjoyed soft play the other day too I would far prefer to go for a walk or bike ride.

  1. This is the cutest balance bike I've ever seen!!! So adorable. I love that it's wooden, it'll last for so long. Getting outside and doing exercise is so important and this is a great way to make it fun. Thank you so much for sharing with #whatevertheweather xx

  3. She looks great on her bike! Mr O loved his wooden balance bike too and Mr A zooms along on his and tells every passer by that it's 'MY bike', so pleased to have his own bike too! Love that her clothes match her bike colours too, very sweet. Thanks so much for linking up to #Whatevertheweather :) x

  4. She really looks like she's having a great time. I wasn't sure whether to get Toby a balance bike but I'm getting more tempted the more I see other kids using them. #MyWildOnes

  5. Lovely post. My sister spotted the balance bike recently and mentioned it to me. I'll have to look into one once Jake grows a little more. x
