Breastfeeding worries - what can I do to help?

I am due my third baby in a few months and already I am worrying about whether I will be able to breastfeed.

With my first she never latched, in fact she never really opened her mouth even for a bottle. I tried expressing to compliment formula feeds for a few weeks but was not producing enough milk so eventually we decided it would be best to just formula feed - for my mental health as much as anything.

With my second he would latch but my milk was delayed and I will be honest I just got so worried about whether he was getting enough. He lost almost 10% of his weight by day 3 so we were put on a feeding plan at the hospital that involved formula. This was the start of the long and slippery slope to formula feeding once more.

This time I really want to succeed. At my 25 week appointment this week my midwife and I talked a bit about what I can do to encourage my milk to come on before birth. Expressing before the birth was suggested and she is going to look and see if there is anything else I can do to help before my section.

I really want to manage this time. I know I gave up to easily last time (so much pain) and we now look at F and think he has a tongue tie which I think wouldn't have helped. I remember he made a weird clicking noise when he fed and thought that was a sign but since they said he never had one I just left it at that.

What hints and tips do you have to help breastfeeding?

Have you ever done anything to help breastfeeding before the baby has arrived?

Did you express early? Did it help?
