Bolster your toddler’s nutritional needs with SMA® PRO Toddler Milk

Advertorial feature

Can you believe that little F is 1.5 years old and M is 3? Two fully fledged toddlers.

Despite growing up so quickly, and moving to a big boy cup at around 6 months old, F still loves his milk. Whether that is a morning drink, afternoon snack or a bedtime comfort drink. He lives for his milk - as does his 3 year old sister!

Now, despite having what I believe is a healthy and varied diet, I could never confess to knowing the exact values of how much vitamin and minerals they are getting each day.

The Diet and Nutrition Survey of Infants and Young Children (DNSIYC) studied the total dietary intakes of nutrients, vitamins and minerals of young children, finding that iron and vitamin D levels in toddlers’ diets were lacking whilst calorie intake and protein were higher than required. In one study they found that children aged 1.5 years to 3 years are only receiving one fifth of their recommended intake of vitamin D from their diet. They did find that those toddlers who drink fortified milks had increased intakes of the nutrients iron, zinc, vitamin A and vitamin D.

Where can we get vitamin D?

For a toddler aged 1 - 3 years it is recommended that they get 7.5 micrograms a day of vitamin D supplement to help support their rapid rates of bone growth. We all know about growth spurts when trousers are suddenly an inch too short one week but were too long a couple of weeks before!

We also all know that having a healthy diet is important for toddlers (and adults) but did you know that vitamin D only occurs naturally in a few foods such as oily fish and eggs.

Vitamin D has been added to some foods such as breakfast cereals, margarines, some yoghurts and formula milks (but not cow’s milk) but the best way to get vitamin D is in the summer by getting outside and enjoying the summer sun on our skin.

Now we live in Scotland so already get less vitamin D than those of you who live in the south of the UK and, well, the weather in Scotland can be temperamental. Since less vitamin D is synthesized on a cloudy day than a sunny day getting enough vitamin D in Scotland could be tricky even in the height of summer - when we are recommended to stay in the shade and cover up and use sunscreen, all things that limit the absorption of Vitamin D. So can you really be sure that you and your toddler are getting enough vitamin D?

Where can I get calcium?

Calcium is vital for strong bones and teeth as well as helping ensure your muscles, nerves and hearts work properly.

With bones growing so rapidly in the toddler years toddlers need a steady supply of calcium to help them grow healthily.

Unlike vitamin D, where sunshine is the best source to get vitamin D naturally, eating a balanced diet is the best way to get calcium.

1-3 year olds need 350 milligrams of calcium daily which can be found in foods such as milk, cheese and other dairy foods. Nuts, bread and fish where you can eat the bones.

Vitamin D helps the absorption of calcium which shows how important it is for your toddler to get the right levels of each.
